Rally to Restore Sanity Draws Diverse Crowd

Approximately 5,000 people congregated at the Texas Capitol over the weekend for the Austin satellite Rally to Restore Sanity, an offshoot of the national rally in Washington sponsored by The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Local public officials such as Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez participated in the event and praised its goals of promoting civil discourse and sanity in American politics.

Congressman Lloyd Doggett, Representative of Texas’ 25th U.S. Congressional District, spoke of the “insane” political infighting and extreme partisanship in Washington, DC, and used the opportunity to urge citizens to vote in the mid-term elections. The main Washington rally was broadcast in its entirety on a large projector near the Capitol steps.
