Farmers – Tom Kelley, 55
By Travis Hlavinka
Reporting Texas
Tom Kelley, a farmer, rancher and crop insurance agent from Eagle Lake, Texas–67 miles west of Houston–goes in-depth about the ins and outs of the agricultural industry during the time of the Coronavirus. Kelley is one of the few people whose scope encompasses both sides of the commodities market. Kelley examined the current futures market and talks about how crop insurance protects revenue:
“Cotton, the guarantee on that is 70 cents a pound. Well right now on the boards, on the futures market, cotton is around 47, 48 cents. It’s a full 22 cents less than they were in January.”
