Halloween 2010 Draws 6th Street Crowds

Crowds flocked to 6th Street in downtown Austin for Halloween weekend, appearing to draw as many people on Saturday, Oct. 30, as on Halloween night itself. Estimates vary dramatically, but easily tens of thousands of merrymakers from Austin and surrounding areas converged on 6th to show off their creative costumes and gawk at others. Popular costumes included the old standards of pirates and evil clowns as well as current pop culture costumes like characters from the James Cameron film “Avatar.” Austin Police closed off the streets from Congress to Red River between 8 and 9 P.M. both nights and a strong police presence on foot, bicycle and horseback existed throughout the evening. The Austin E-Bus, a joint service from Capital Metro and the Austin Police Department, regularly arrived from the University of Texas, west campus and Riverside areas, packed with student revelers.
