EoT: ISIS Edition

A roundup of news, columns and features about the state, from media around the world.

A terrorism research assistant is being courted by Islamic extremists after posting a tweet, reported the New York Daily News and many other national outlets.

Jennifer Williams, a self-described “blonde tattooed girl from Texas,” went from 60 Twitter followers to more than 6,000 and growing after tweeting: “Sorry I read the Quran to learn abt terrorist beliefs but ended up converting to Islam b/c of what it said. #MuslimApologies#sorrynotsorry.” She wrote on Lawfare that she used the MuslimApologies hashtag after seeing that Muslims around the world were using it sarcastically.

A few of her new fans sent marriage proposals.

“A healthy number of them are Islamic extremists, including no small number of supporters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS),” she wrote.

She encouraged her followers to spend less time on Twitter and more time reading the Koran. The Koran “changed my life for the better,” Williams wrote. “It might do the same for you if you take the time to really understand what it says.”

A California congressman warned on Fox News that ISIS terrorists are crossing from Mexico into Texas.

San Diego Republican Duncan Hunter said Border Patrol agents have captured at least 10 ISIS militants. “They aren’t flying B-1 bombers bombing American cities, but they are going to be bombing American cities coming across from Mexico,” Hunter said. “There’s nobody talking about it.”

The Department of Homeland Security disagreed, using the acronym the Obama administration prefers for the terrorist organization.

“The suggestion that individuals who have ties to ISIL have been apprehended at the Southwest border is categorically false, and not supported by any credible intelligence or the facts on the ground,” a spokesman said. “DHS continues to have no credible intelligence to suggest terrorist organizations are actively plotting to cross the Southwest border.”
